Default Your opinion - going from 1.25" to 1.5" (or 1.75" track)

Hey all,

I posted this to HCS forum as well, but thought I would ask here too. I have a 2007 Polaris Dragon 700 with a 121" and 1.25" camoplast ripsaw lug on it. I was thinking of increasing to a 1.5" camoplast ripsaw track. Some are saying to go up higher to a 1.75".

So my riding style has been about 85% trail riding. But I would like to do a little more off trail, so hope this year it might be 65-70% on trail. Therefore, I am mostly an "on-trail" rider.

Wondering if people have an opinion (and more importantly experience) going from a 1.25" to a 1.5 or 1.75" tracks. Ride quality on and off trail, etc.
I understand about changing sprocket and clutch... which I am doing anyhow (or at least the clutch) and will do the sprocket if I do the upgrade. I am also getting a pipe set-up from SLP which will give me more HP.

So your thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks for your time!
Joe

Joe,

From what I gather, a deeper lug track aids greatly in deep snow traction. Downside to a deeper lug is when in marginal snow, the slides may heat up due to lack of snow (farther away from snow due to deeper lugs). You can still stud the deeper lugs but inquire with dealer to see if you'll need to add any additional protection in tunnel. You may give up a little top end as well.

Just a thought, My buddy has found a place that will sell a rail extension and a longer track for the same money as just buying a track(rip saw 1.50) He's aways been the one we have to dig out of the powder, A longer track is key if you ask me.

He is dead on about the Longer track vs the taller Lug I have a 141"
switch back with 1.25" ripsaw and I have another sled with a 121" that came with a 1" Lug which we put a 1.5" lug on both are rip saws and there is not much of a differance in deep snow with the 1.5" over the 1" lug you will get more bite with less track spin but it will not float like a longer track will with the 1.25" plus you do not want more than 1.5" on packed trails the lugs will tend to bend and wear bad.
